The strong emphasis on medicine and the natural science in the Univesity of Eastern Finland creates a solid base for R&D and training for experts. The University's many disciplines, the University of Applied Sciences, the Kuopio University hospital and local research institutes all house expertise in healthcare and wellbeing sector. In this field of activity, this emphasis is on training and R&D to create more expertise and business opportunities to be exploited by the commercial enterprises working in this sector.

These enterprises are currently developing and producing reagents and test systems needed in diagnostics, assays and logging of biosignals as well as developing and manufacturing the next generation of sensors and instruments. There is also production and product development in software and embedded systems for healthcare IT. The strong regional biotechnology expertise is being exploited by local enterprises which develop products and services.

In addition to local enterprises, the Savonia University of Applied Sciences also houses expertise in industrial design, instrumentation and instrument manufacturing. Kuopio Academy of Design is responsible for the design services and Engineering Kuopio, Information Technology R&D Unit specializes in instrumentation, instrument and software services.
